The doors of this airport were opened to the general public on May 11th, 2009. Though the operations commenced as of 11th May, there was gala opening ceremony conducted from the 8th to 10th May, 2009. The US Airforce Thunderbirds put up a spectacular show during this ceremony that was attended by various dignitaries from not only the United States, but also other parts of the world. The first commercial flight to fly into this airport belonged to Sun Country Airlines. It arrived from Minneapolis to this airport. The only other airline that was present on the day the formal operations commenced was AirTran Airways which is the only original airline service provider currently at the Branson airport. In order to obtain the permission to own and run this airport privately, Branson Airport, LLC had to give away this land as ‘gift’ to Taney County.

This airport caters to both national and international travelers. The three letter code assigned to this airport by the Federal Aviation administration and the International Air Transport Association are BBG and BKG respectively.

Before the Branson Airport came into existence, the airport that catered to travelers to this part of the world was the Springfield-Branson International Airport which is situated at a distance of 50 miles from Branson.
